- "Elements of art are stylistic features that are included within an art piece to help the artist communicate."
Architecture is an art form, so understanding the seven elements of design (line, shape, form, texture, space, value, and color) is necessary. Once an understanding of the elements has been established, using them creatively is a key skill to have.
Line: The basic element of design that is used to create shapes, patterns, and textures. Lines can be straight, curved, horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.
Shape: The form or configuration of an object, such as a circle or square. Shapes can be organic, irregular, or geometric.
Color: The visual perception of different wavelengths of light that can be used to create emotion, mood, and contrast. Colors can be warm or cool, complementary, or monochromatic.
Texture: The tactile quality of a surface or material that can be used to create depth, contrast, and interest. Textures can be rough, smooth, bumpy, or shiny.
Pattern: A repeated decorative design or motif that can be used to create rhythm and visual interest. Patterns can be simple or complex, symmetrical or asymmetrical.
Space: The area or volume that surrounds an object in a design. Space can be positive (occupied by objects) or negative (empty), and can be used to create balance and contrast.
Balance: The distribution of visual weight in a design that can be symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial. Balance can be used to create stability and harmony.
Contrast: The difference in visual elements, such as size, value, or color, that can be used to create emphasis and interest.
Scale: The relative size of objects or elements in a design that can be used to create perspective and hierarchy.
Proportion: The relationship of one object or element to another in a design that can be used to create harmony and balance.
