Study of the properties and behavior of materials that are used in optical systems, such as glass, plastic, and crystal.

Wave theory of light: Describes how light behaves as waves, including properties such as wavelength, frequency, amplitude, and polarization.
Refraction and Snell's Law: Discusses how light bends when it passes from one medium to another, using Snell's Law to calculate the angle of refraction.
Reflection and Total Internal Reflection: Describes how light reflects off surfaces and how total internal reflection occurs when light is completely reflected at an interface.
Absorption and Transmission: Discusses how light is absorbed or transmitted by materials, including the Beer-Lambert law and the optical properties of different materials.
Optical Properties of Materials: Describes how materials interact with light, including refractive index, birefringence, anisotropy, and dispersion.
Optical Devices: Covers the fundamentals of optical devices such as lenses, mirrors, prisms, and filters, including their properties and how they can be used.
Optical Spectroscopy: Discusses how light is used to study the properties of materials, including absorption, emission, and scattering spectroscopy techniques.
Nonlinear Optics: Describes how the properties of light can change when it interacts with certain materials, including second-harmonic generation, third-harmonic generation, and parametric amplification.
Photonic Materials: Covers the properties and applications of photonic materials, including photonic crystals, metamaterials, and plasmonic materials.
Optical Communications: Discusses the principles of optical communications systems, including fiber-optic communication and free-space optical communication.
Glass: It is one of the most common optical materials used in lenses, prisms, and windows. It is transparent and can be molded into various shapes.
Plastics: Plastics are lightweight and inexpensive. They are commonly used in lenses and prisms but have limited optical performance.
Silicon: Silicon is used in infrared optics because it is transparent in the infrared spectrum.
Germanium: Germanium is used in infrared optics for its high index of refraction and its ability to transmit infrared light.
Sapphire: Sapphire is used in high-end optical devices because of its exceptional optical properties, high refractive index, and increased durability compared to glass.
Zinc Selenide: Zinc selenide is a good infrared transmitting material that is commonly used for lenses and optical windows.
Calcium Fluoride: Calcium fluoride is used in UV applications because it is transparent in the UV region.
Quartz: Quartz is used in polarizers and other optical components because it has a birefringent property and is transparent in the visible region.
Gallium Arsenide: Gallium arsenide is a semiconductor material used in laser diodes and other optoelectronic devices.
Diamond: Diamond is used for its high optical quality and good thermal conduction properties. It is used in high-end optical devices, including lenses.
