Queer theory is a field of inquiry that seeks to queer or disrupt heteronormative assumptions and categories. This approach is rooted in post-structuralist thought and has been influenced by feminist and postcolonial theory as well. Queer theorists such as Eve Sedgwick and Judith Butler have analyzed the ways in which sexuality is socially constructed and used to maintain power relations, and have argued for a more fluid and flexible conception of identity and desire.
