This was the first and most significant Protestant Reformation movement. It began in Germany in the early 16th century when Martin Luther challenged the authority of the Roman Catholic Church and demanded reforms, such as the abolition of indulgences and the restoration of the Bible as the sole authority for Christian faith and practice.
