The Paleolithic Period (Old Stone Age) extends from the earliest stone tool use by hominins around 3.3 million years ago to the end of the last Ice Age (about 11,700 years ago). In contrast, the Neolithic Period (New Stone Age) marks the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture and the domestication of animals.
