Urban forests refer to trees and green spaces within cities and towns. They offer carbon sequestration capabilities, enhancing aesthetics of urban spaces, mitigating floods and playing an important role in limiting urban heat island effect. Urban forests generally comprise a range of species – some introduced and others endemic – that exhibit multiple benefits related to conserving biodiversity, restoration of degraded environments, conservation of heritage species (such as traditional medicinal plants), creation of green jobs, and promotion of environmental education.
