An overview of how weather conditions and tides affect boating and how to use this information to ensure a safe and enjoyable boating experience.

Meteorology: The scientific study of the atmosphere, weather patterns, and meteorological phenomena such as storms, hurricanes, and tornadoes.
Atmospheric Science: The interdisciplinary study of the Earth's atmosphere, encompassing components such as thermodynamics, radiation, cloud physics, and atmospheric chemistry.
Climate Change: The long-term alteration of global weather patterns, including rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and increasing frequency or severity of weather events due to human activity.
Oceanography: The study of the physical, chemical, biological, and geological properties of the ocean, including the role of the oceans in the Earth's climate system and the dynamics of ocean currents.
Hydrology: The study of water in the Earth system, including the movement of water through the atmosphere, surface, and subsurface.
Tides: The periodic rise and fall of sea levels caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun on the Earth.
Ocean currents: The movements of water in the ocean, driven by a combination of winds, temperature and salinity differences, and Coriolis forces.
Marine Navigation: The art of navigating a vessel over water using instruments and observations of the natural environment, such as stars, planets, tides, and currents.
Weather Forecasting: The use of scientific and statistical methods to predict future weather conditions based on atmospheric and oceanic data.
Storm Tracking: The monitoring and prediction of severe weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards using satellite and radar data, computer models, and on-site observations.
Severe Weather Preparedness: The measures taken to minimize the risks and damages associated with severe weather events, including evacuation plans, emergency supplies, and early warning systems.
Safety at sea: The practices and systems designed to ensure the safety of crew and passengers on board a vessel, including emergency procedures, communication protocols, and navigation rules.
Maritime Law: The body of law governing the legal relationships between ships, seafarers, and ports, including provisions for safety, pollution prevention, and commerce regulations.
Marine Ecology: The study of the relationships between organisms and their environment in the marine ecosystem, including food webs, habitats, and biodiversity conservation.
Sunny: Clear skies with no cloud cover.
Cloudy: Overcast skies with a considerable amount of cloud cover.
Rainy: Continuous rainfall with wet and slippery conditions.
Thunderstorm: A type of storm with lightning and thunder, usually accompanied by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and occasionally hail.
Snowy: Falling snowflakes and accumulation of snow on the ground.
Foggy: Low visibility due to a dense fog.
Hailstorm: A type of storm with falling hailstones resulting in damage to cars, roofs, etc.
Windy: Strong gusts of wind with or without rain.
High tide: The water level at its highest point in the tidal cycle.
Low tide: The water level at its lowest point in the tidal cycle.
Spring tide: High tides are higher and low tides are lower than usual due to the alignment of the sun, moon, and Earth.
Neap tide: High tides are lower and low tides are higher than usual due to the moon and sun being at right angles to each other.
Slack tide: A brief period of the calm and still water between the ebb and flow of the tides.
Storm surge: A temporary rise in sea level caused by high winds and low pressure during a storm.
