This type of puppetry is an ancient form of Vietnamese theatre that originated in the northern regions of the country. The puppets are made of wood and lacquered and are operated using strings or bamboo rods in a pool of water. The puppeteers stand waist-deep in water and manipulate the puppets using long bamboo rods concealed beneath the water.
