The study of the various printing techniques, such as offset printing, digital printing, and letterpress printing, used to produce printed materials.

History of Printing: A study of the evolution of printing technology, from the earliest form of printing to modern techniques, including the introduction of the printing press, movable type, and digital printing.
Printing Techniques: A study of the different methods used for printing, including lithography, letterpress, relief printing, intaglio, and screen printing.
Color Theory: A study of the principles of color and its application in printing, including color spaces, color models, and color management.
Typography: A study of the art and technique of arranging type, including the different typefaces, font families, and font sizes.
Composition: A study of the design elements and principles used in printing, including layout, balance, and contrast.
Prepress: A study of the processes involved in preparing digital files for print, including file formats, digital color proofing, and file preparation.
Press Operations: A study of the physical processes involved in printing, including ink application and paper handling.
Print Finishing: A study of the processes involved in finishing printed materials, including binding, lamination, and cutting.
Risks and Safety: A study of the health and safety risks associated with printing processes, including exposure to chemicals and hazards associated with the operation of printing equipment.
Sustainability: A study of the environmental impact of printing operations, including the use of sustainable materials and practices, and the reduction of waste and pollution.
Offset Printing: A process that uses a plate to transfer an inked image onto a rubber blanket which then presses the image onto paper.
Gravure Printing: A process that involves engraving an image onto a cylinder which then transfers ink onto paper.
Flexography: A process that uses flexible relief plates to transfer ink onto a variety of substrates including paper, plastic, and fabrics.
Digital Printing: A process that involves printing directly from a digital file onto paper or other substrates using inkjet printers, laser printers, or other digital printing technologies.
Screen Printing: A process that involves using a mesh stencil to transfer ink onto paper, fabric, and other substrates.
Letterpress Printing: A process that involves pressing ink onto paper using a raised surface such as a type or image plate.
Thermography Printing: A process that involves adding a resin powder to wet ink and then heating it to create a raised or embossed effect.
Dye Sublimation Printing: A process that uses heat to transfer dye onto a substrate such as fabric, paper, or plastic, resulting in a full-color image.
Lithography Printing: A process that involves using a flat plate with an image area that attracts ink and a non-image area that repels ink, resulting in a printed image.
Intaglio Printing: A process that involves engraving an image into a metal plate which is then inked and pressed onto paper or other substrates.
"Printing is a process for mass reproducing text and images using a master form or template."
"The earliest non-paper products involving printing include cylinder seals and objects such as the Cyrus Cylinder and the Cylinders of Nabonidus."
"Woodblock printing...appeared in China before 220 AD for cloth printing."
"It would not be applied to paper until the seventh century."
"The movable type was invented by Bi Sheng around 1040 AD."
"The printing press was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century."
"The technology of printing played a key role in the development of the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution."
"The technology of printing laid the material basis for the modern knowledge-based economy."
"The technology of printing...laid the material basis for...the spread of learning to the masses."
