Children's Literature: Introduction to children's literature and its different genres. Understanding the principles and criteria for selection of children's literature in a library or museum setting. Familiarization with popular books and authors.
Early Childhood Development: Understanding the developmental stages of children from infancy to preschool age. Knowing how to support children's physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. Learning how to design appropriate programs and services for different age groups.
Programming and Outreach: Planning and implementing library or museum programs and events for children and teenagers. Understanding the needs and interests of different age groups. Learning how to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and how to reach out to underserved populations.
Collection Development: Understanding the principles and practices of collection development for youth materials in a library or museum setting. Knowing how to select and purchase materials, assess their quality and relevance, and manage the budget. Learning how to weed and maintain the collection.
Information Literacy: Teaching children and teenagers how to find, evaluate, and use information effectively and ethically. Understanding the role of libraries and museums in promoting digital literacy and critical thinking skills. Learning how to design instruction and assess outcomes.
Community Partnerships: Building partnerships with schools, community organizations, and other stakeholders. Collaborating with other professionals to provide holistic services for children and families. Learning how to leverage community resources and funding opportunities.
Technology and Media: Understanding the impact of technology and media on youth development and learning. Knowing how to select and use digital resources, tools, and platforms effectively and safely.
