A socially constructed system of practices, norms, and values that define and regulate the roles, expectations, and behaviors of women, men, and gender non-binary people in society.

Gender identity: The gender someone identifies with, which may or may not align with their biological sex.
Gender expression: The way someone presents their gender through their appearance, behavior, and communication.
Biological sex: The physical characteristics of a person's body that determine whether they are male or female.
Gender roles: The socially constructed expectations and behaviors associated with being male or female.
Patriarchy: A system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it.
Feminism: A movement that advocates for women's rights and equality between sexes.
Queer theory: The exploration of the relationship between sexual orientation, gender identity, and social status.
Homophobia: Prejudice or discrimination against individuals who identify as LGBTQ+.
Transgender: Someone who identifies as a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth.
Homosexuality: Sexual attraction to individuals of the same gender.
Heterosexuality: Sexual attraction to individuals of the opposite gender.
Intersex: Individuals born with variations in their biological sex characteristics that don't fit typical male or female definitions.
Sexuality: The physical, emotional, and romantic attraction to others.
Sexism: Discrimination or prejudice based on one's gender or sex.
Misogyny: Hatred, dislike, or mistrust of women.
Androgyny: A combination of masculine and feminine characteristics.
Sex positive: An attitude or belief that embraces, rather than stigmatizes, sexuality and sexual expression.
Gender-based violence: Any act that causes physical, sexual, or psychological harm or suffering to a person because of their gender.
Intersectionality: The interconnectedness of social categories such as race, gender, sexuality, disability, and class.
Transphobia: Prejudice or discrimination against individuals who are transgender.
male: The topic of male in Gender and Sexuality Studies explores the social construction and lived experiences associated with individuals who are assigned male at birth or identify as male.
female: The topic of "female" in Gender and Sexuality Studies pertains to the social and cultural aspects of being assigned or identifying as a woman, and the experiences and inequalities associated with femininity.
non-binary: Non-binary refers to individuals who do not exclusively identify as male or female, and may identify outside of the traditional gender binary.
genderqueer: Genderqueer refers to individuals who identify outside of, or challenge, the binary notions of male and female, often embracing a non-binary or fluid gender identity.
androgynous: Androgynous refers to individuals whose appearance, behavior, or identity combines both masculine and feminine characteristics, challenging traditional binaries of gender.
agender: Agender refers to individuals who do not identify with any gender or who have a gender identity that is neutral, without any connection to masculinity or femininity.
bigender: Bigender refers to individuals who identify and experience a combination of two gender identities, fluctuating between traditionally male and female genders or a mix thereof.
intersex: Intersex refers to a range of natural variations in sex characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female.
Two-Spirit: Two-Spirit refers to an Indigenous concept of gender identity that encompasses spiritual, cultural, and gender diversity, acknowledging the presence of both masculinity and femininity in an individual.
