This subfield follows the historical studies of queer theory and LGBT studies, which studies the variegated cultural and societal aspect of individuals affected by their gender identity and preferences, gender norms, and their interactions in society.

Gender identity: Understanding the differences between assigned sex and one's own gender identity.
Sexual orientation: Examining how people identify and classify their attraction to others based on gender and other factors.
Patriarchy: Investigating the power dynamics of male dominance in society and how it contributes towards inequality.
Queer theory: Exploring theories that challenge traditional perspectives on gender and sexual orientation.
Intersectionality: Examining how multiple oppressive structures like racism, classism, ableism, homophobia intersect with each other and over-determine an individual's experiences.
Homonormativity: Understanding how traditional heterosexual norms of assuming monogamous relationships and nuclear families have also seeped into queer identification.
Heteronormativity: Analyzing the assumption and promotion of heterosexuality as the norm in society.
Homophobia: Examining attitudes towards homosexuality and how it affects the daily lives of individuals identifying as queer.
Transphobia: Understanding negative attitudes towards transgender individuals and how it contributes to violence and discrimination.
LGBTQ+ rights: Examining historical and current social justice movements to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.
The history of queer studies: Tracing the development of queer studies as an academic discipline and its relationship to social movements.
Queer ecology: Analyzing the relationship between queer identity and environmental justice.
