Race & Ethnicity: Definition: The terms race and ethnicity are related but distinct concepts. Race refers to physical differences in groups of people, while ethnicity refers to cultural differences. An understanding of these concepts is crucial to any study of race and ethnicity.
Prejudice and Racism: Definition: Prejudice refers to preconceived ideas about a group of people that are not based on actual experience or knowledge. Racism is a more intense form of prejudice that is based on the idea that one race or ethnicity is superior to others.
Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism: Definition: Ethnocentrism is the belief that one’s own culture is superior to others, while cultural relativism is the idea that a culture should be judged based on its own standards, rather than on the standards of another culture.
Stereotyping: Definition: Stereotyping is the practice of assigning certain characteristics to a group of people based on their race or ethnicity.
Intersectionality: Definition: Intersectionality is the study of how different social identities, such as race, gender, sexuality, and class, intersect and interact with each other.
Colonialism and Post-colonialism: Definition: Colonialism refers to the practice of one country dominating another country or region for economic or political gain. Post-colonialism refers to the period after colonialism, in which countries are struggling to build their own identity and overcome the effects of colonization.
Multiculturalism: Definition: Multiculturalism is the idea that different cultures and cultural identities should be respected and celebrated within a society.
Institutional Racism: Definition: Institutional racism refers to the ways in which racism is built into social institutions such as the criminal justice system, education system, and healthcare system.
White Privilege: Definition: White privilege refers to the advantages that white people have in society simply because of their race.
Racialization: Definition: Racialization refers to the process by which a group of people are assigned a racial identity, often through stereotypes or prejudices.
Immigration and Migration: Definition: Immigration refers to the movement of people from one country to another, while migration refers to any movement of people from one place to another. Understanding the history and impact of immigration and migration is crucial in understanding race and ethnicity.
Race and the Media: Definition: The way that people of different races are portrayed in the media can have a significant impact on public perceptions and attitudes about race and ethnicity.
Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing: Definition: Genocide refers to the deliberate killing of a large group of people, often based on their race or ethnicity. Ethnic cleansing refers to the forced removal of people from a particular region based on their race or ethnicity.
