The process of evaluating and quantifying the likelihood and consequences of harm from exposure to environmental hazards.

Hazard identification: The process of identifying potential hazards that could cause harm to human health or the environment.
Exposure assessment: The process of determining how much exposure an individual or group has to a particular hazard.
Toxicology: The study of the toxic effects of chemicals and other substances on living organisms.
Risk characterization: The process of combining hazard identification, exposure assessment, and toxicology to determine the level of risk associated with a particular hazard.
Risk management: The process of making decisions about how to control or reduce risk, including the use of regulatory measures, risk communication, and risk reduction strategies.
Environmental monitoring: The process of measuring and monitoring the environment for potential hazards, including pollutants, toxins, and other harmful substances.
Epidemiology: The study of the distribution and determinants of health and disease in human populations, and the application of this knowledge to the prevention and control of health problems.
Emergency preparedness: The process of preparing for and responding to emergencies and disasters, including natural disasters, chemical spills, and terrorist attacks.
Contaminant transport modeling: The use of mathematical models to predict the movement and fate of contaminants in the environment.
Health impact assessment: The process of assessing the potential health effects of proposed policies, programs, or projects before they are implemented.
Human Health Risk Assessment: This type of risk assessment is used to evaluate the risk associated with exposure to chemicals, pathogens, radiation, or other substances and hazards in the environment.
Ecological Risk Assessment: This assessment is used to evaluate the risk to non-human organisms in the environment, including plants, animals, and ecosystems.
Exposure Assessment: This type of risk assessment is used to evaluate the amount and duration of exposure to a hazardous substance or agent, often used in conjunction with human health or ecological risk assessment.
Hazard Identification: This assessment is used to identify whether a substance, agent, or activity is hazardous or poses a potential risk to human health or the environment.
Risk Perception Assessment: This type of assessment is used to evaluate the public's perception of a hazard, and their willingness to accept and manage the risks associated with it.
Risk Communication Assessment: This assessment is used to evaluate how risk information is communicated to stakeholders, including the public, industry, and policymakers.
Risk Management: This assessment evaluates the options and effectiveness of interventions designed to reduce or mitigate the risks identified in a risk assessment.
"The results of this process may be expressed in a quantitative or qualitative fashion. Risk assessment is an inherent part of a broader risk management strategy to help reduce any potential risk-related consequences."
"Risk assessment determines possible mishaps, their likelihood and consequences, and the tolerances for such events."

"Risk assessment identifies and analyses potential (future) events that may negatively impact individuals, assets, and/or the environment (i.e. hazard analysis)."
