Under the gold standard, countries fixed their currencies to a specific amount of gold. The value of currency was therefore linked to the availability of gold reserves. The gold standard was the predominant monetary system for much of the late 19th and early 20th centuries until the Great Depression, as it was believed to provide stability and predictability.
