A tort usually consists of four essential elements, namely, duty, breach of duty, causation, and damages. Duty implies that one person is obligated to behave in a certain way towards another. Breach of duty implies that the defendant failed to fulfill the obligation. Causation relates to the connection between the defendant's action or inaction and the plaintiff's harm. Finally, damages refer to the harm or loss that the plaintiff has suffered.
