This is the most common type of photosynthesis found in plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. It uses water as the electron donor and generates oxygen as a byproduct. The general chemical equation of oxygenic photosynthesis is 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2.
